4th
event in BK Boxing series to benefit up and coming gym
The 4th
event in the Burger King Boxing series ’08 will seek to raise
funds for the Heavy Metal Iron Club – an up and coming gym
situated in Windsor Heights over looking St. Ann’s Bay.
The gym has been in existence for over eight years but has been
attempting to train boxers for the past two. So far some 16 young
men have been involved in what has been a very informal boxing
program in need of direction. The facility is run by popular and
experienced football coach Porter Reid who is better known for his
work with clubs such as Black Stars and Brazil from St. Ann in the
National League, Mt. Salem in St. James and schoolboy sides York
Castle High and Marcus Garvey Technical. Reid developed a liking
for the discipline and hard work associated with boxing and of
such exchanged his coaching boots for boxing gloves.
The Heavy Metal Iron Club boxers are chomping at the bit to learn
the game in a formal way, the coach himself is yearning to taught
in the ways of the sweet science.
A recent visit to the gym by Jamaica Boxing Board President
William Tavares-Finson left him most impressed and he has pledged
to offer as much support as is possible to the coach and boxers,
this to include training manuals, sessions at the national gym in
Kingston and of course equipment. The equipment in use at the gym
are a few bought out of pocket by Reid.
The promoters of “Champions Stand Alone” have also pledged to
assist with funds raised from the event , as also to give a couple
of juniors from the gym some exposure on the card which will
feature four bouts with boxers from the Cayman Islands against
Jamaican fighters.
In a novelty addition the event will crown Jamaica’s “pound for
pound” eating champion. It happens this Saturday May 31 at Jus’
Cheers in St. Ann’s Bay. |
